Even Further
by
Forest Garfield Hairston

Asleep through the long night stood me
in a small shadow between dark and light.
Here I felt but dimly aware that I was asleep.
Though now but there I but saw more things,
all blind colors more clearly, much more.

I so could see the hurried wind fiercely blow,
and my dull question raged within my mind.
Was I here but Black, was I only the White?
Might ever I ever quell my anger shaded by
the mysterious spite against my color.

Where have I but been in my mindless travel
tinctured color lay all along the road I walked.
Even where ill wind swirled and insulted my face.
Even if there and here I should not even care,
but even if there, I saw things even further.
