Black Soul
Thru the early morning until the darker night
They would gather there calmly unafraid
All along my dingy street were the stoic faces
Eyes rarely read, feeling rarely known
Gilded words never spelled to read
Black Soul.
Antebellum days, African slaves and White folks
Jazzy music and furrowed cotton fields
Love and drama played on, down thru yesterday
Swirling in dust and wind, courage and grit
Gilded words never spelled to read
Black Soul.
What ill history books betraying me yet still
Who wrote the stoic faces along my street
Read me where there my father stood long ago
Africa and cries, churches and civil rights
Gilded words never spelled to read
Black Soul. |
