Harriet Tubman
Her Legacy Lives On
by
Forest Hairston

And so Black Legacy lives on, Harriet Tubman left it here when she died in 1913. No shackles, no master, no laws of this American land could hold Harriet Tubman in bondage. This courageous lady was born as a slave on a Maryland plantation and given the name Araminta Ross at some time around 1820. She escaped to freedom in the year of 1849, but Harriet refused to leave her mother and father behind. And this lady refused as well to leave her Black Brothers and Black Sisters in a blatant place called slavery. Time after time, she went back again and again to lead her people to freedom. Harriet Tubman always walked ahead of the fugitive runaways as she led them on North by the North Star.

Harriet in her dangerous missions that were about freedom or death, is accredited with leading 300 or more fugitive slaves farther on away from slavery. Eluding the dangerous white men who were known as slave catchers was always a covert and arduous task. Yet many of the Black slaves whom she conducted through the Underground Railroad past the slave catchers and vicious bloodhounds, went on to gain absolute freedom further North and on farther to Canada.

"Moses" was the famed name they called the lady who wore the taut legendary face. Moses, Moses, her legendary face. Harriet Tubman, the brave Black woman who served the Union cause in the Civil War. Her spirit to be free, and her courage to pursue freedom. Here, we hold on to the Black Legacy that Harriet Tubman left behind. Moses, Moses, the most renowned. The most courageous conductor of the incredible Underground Railroad. The legendary faces, they were many. The warriors who stood up against slavery. The warriors who were counted for. And now then, the legendary faces passed it on. Harriet Tubman, her legacy lives on.
